about

“You think them blues ain't on this banjo neck the same as they're on that guitar? They're just as much on this banjo neck as they are on that guitar or piano or anywhere else if you know where to go and get it, and if you learn it and know how to play it.” - Dock Boggs

Taking inspiration from the deep blues of such luminaries as Charlie Patton, Son House, and Mississippi Fred McDowell, Jim Arkus has forged a unique clawhammer sound on the banjo that is both innovative and traditional at the same time. “A Little Less Than Before” is Jim’s first album to feature the five string banjo and the mountain dulcimer exclusively. The album is comprised of eight original tracks – from the Lightnin’ Hopkins inspired opener “Got Drunk on Thursday” to the driving and percussive home-grown tall tale “Old Brown.”
